You know, I had a giant, giant post ready. I started compiling it last year, the day after your 21st birthday. Sounds insane, doesn’t it? It probably is. I was going to post it today, too, on your 22nd birthday. A year’s worth of thoughts and feelings into one post. Sounds even more insane, doesn’t it? It definitely is.
It was, essentially, a “100 Reasons to Love You” post. I finished it ages ago, I probably got fifty in the first day, but the last fifty, I added as the year progressed. I added reasons through the breakup, through the Dream concerts, through the Japanese promotions and through all those trips to Europe. And when I went back to read it through for any mistakes, I realized it was a lot less about reasons to love you—it was more just chronicling the way you’ve grown this past year, reason #86 is, for example, “for the way you got sick in London.”
And that’s silly, you know? Because there’s so much more to love about you than just what you’ve done in a year, or two, three, four years. Suddenly, that 100 reasons post just seemed so silly to me, because it can never sum up everything that I could say.
So, instead, I’ll just say, be happy, Kim Jonghyun. Smile, for all the things that make you happy. Smile, and be selfish for one day. Smile, and don’t regret anything. Smile, for how far you’ve come, because despite what you think, the world loves you. Smile, because that voice of yours has brought so many more to other people. Smile, for all the things that still await you. Smile, because you’re beautiful when you do. Smile, simply because you can.
Happy 22nd Birthday, Kim Jonghyun.
